"Modern aspirations have risen in different ways in the world, but always through ruptural conflicts with forces of the past. From the different line-up in the decisive conflicts between modern change and traditional preservation we can distinguish four major roads to modernity in the world, roads which may be sub-divided into different lanes.

There was a pioneering road, that of European civil war, but it makes little sense to pinpoint an ideal sequence and “Sonderwege� (deviations). On the contrary, instead of one ideal type or, alternatively, of self-sufficient multiple modernities, we had better start out being aware of the normal entanglement of different modernities, and of modernism and traditionalism.

My presentation will focus on socio-political legacies of the four main routes to and through modernity. Originally, the four routes to modernity was a discovery in a global comparative history of the right to vote."
